24 Oct Swedish 50 Öre Coin Cufflinks: The Last Öre Coin’s Story
Some coins are remembered not because they were valuable, but because they were part of everyday life. Sweden’s 50 öre coin is a lovely example. Once used for ordinary purchases, it now tells a story about changing money, Swedish identity and the small details we associate with home. For someone with Swedish roots, that makes it an interesting starting point for a thoughtful gift.
What was the Swedish 50 öre coin?
An öre is one hundredth of a Swedish krona, so 50 öre represented half a krona. The denomination was familiar to generations of shoppers, even though individual coin designs changed over time. Sweden’s later 50 öre coins carried the denomination alongside the words SVERIGE and ÖRE. These simple markings make the coin recognisably Swedish without needing a lengthy explanation.
Why did Sweden stop using 50 öre?
The Swedish central bank, Sveriges Riksbank, confirms that 30 September 2010 was the final day the 50 öre coin was legal tender. From October that year, the 1 krona became Sweden’s lowest-value circulating coin. The change did not erase öre from prices: card payments could still use exact amounts, while cash totals were rounded to the nearest krona. In other words, the little coin disappeared from pockets without the unit disappearing from everyday arithmetic.
This was the end of a much longer chapter. The Riksbank traces the first Swedish öre coin to 1522 and explains that the kronor-and-öre system was established in 1873. You can explore that timeline in the Riksbank’s history of the öre.
From Swedish pocket change to coin cufflinks
At World Coin Cufflinks, we enjoy finding a second life for genuine coins from different countries. Our Swedish 50 öre coin cufflinks use real Swedish coins rather than a printed imitation. Their appeal is the connection to a place and a period of everyday life, not a promise that an old coin is necessarily rare or valuable.
They can suit someone who grew up in Sweden, has Swedish family, remembers travelling there or simply likes unusual accessories with a story. A pair can also add a personal country connection to a wedding outfit, birthday gift or anniversary present.
